TAKE ACTION

THE POLICY BRIEFS ARE COMPLETE

On to step 3!

Only members of CommonSense American can weigh in on the policy briefs. If you are not yet a member of CommonSense American, please join. If you’re already a member, we invite you to read the policy brief you have been assigned and share your opinion as to the most promising solution.

AN AMAZING START

We’ve been overwhelmed by the response from both the American people and Congress.

We recently asked members of Common Sense American to take the first step and help us choose issues.  We had a very balanced group of over 2,600 members share which issues they were interested in. We’ve also attracted the interest of several congressional committees who’ve come to share our conviction that the Four Step Process will make it easier to pass commonsense solutions in Congress.  These committees are hungry for our results.

WHAT WE’RE DOING RIGHT NOW

It's time to weigh in.

We’ve picked our issues, we’ve created briefs, and now we need the help of everyday Americans to identify solutions wise enough to attract broad, cross-partisan support.

1. IDENTIFY ISSUES

Our Members identify solutions with the greatest promise of attracting broad, cross-partisan support.

These issues fall into two categories including substantive issues (such as healthcare, the debt and deficit, and immigration) and democratic reform issues (such as election reform and the partisan gerrymandering of congressional districts).

2. DEVELOP BRIEFS

Our staff develops a thorough policy brief on each issue.

These are policy briefs, not position papers.  Our staff doesn’t draw conclusions about what the right answers are, but works hard to make the strongest case for each competing perspective.

3. WEIGH IN

Each member reviews the brief to which they’ve been randomly assigned and weighs in on the policy questions.

4. SHARE YOUR OWN VIEWS

Each member shares their own views with their members of Congress.

We don’t take policy positions as an organization.  Instead, we follow the principle of Loyalty to Conscience.  Each member shares their own views whatever those views are.  This provides a reflection of what Americans–Republicans, Democrats, and independents–think having had a chance to review a non-partisan brief.

Our Members will identify CommonSense Solutions from the competing perspectives presented in these briefs.

Frequently Asked Questions about the third Step

What will CommonSense American do with member feedback?

We will compile and share our members' feedback.

Do we have to review the whole brief and weigh in on it all at once?

It is important to read the whole brief before weighing in, because there are competing approaches that need to be compared. However, you can certainly read the brief in stages as you have time. And, each answer you provide on the questions at the end is saved as you go, so it’s fine to work on it in stages too.

How did CommonSense American compile the briefs?

We spoke with think tanks, policy area experts, and elected officials to identify promising policies. Then we spent a significant amount of time reading through hundreds of pages of legislation, research, and commentary in order to distill the substantive components down into a brief.

What are all of the issues that were selected?

Members chose three substantive policy areas: (1) Education and Opportunity, (2) Healthcare Costs, and (3) Congressional Reform.

How will members evaluate the specific policy proposal included in the selected issues?

We provide a detailed breakdown of the competing policies and research surrounding them. From there, members will answer survey questions about whether they support or oppose each legislative approach. We also allow members to provide open-ended feedback.

Thank you for Weighing In with us!
